Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged a thorough investigation into the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, saying those found guilty will face action. The 22-year-old, who was from Sarma’s constituency, was found unconscious early on Saturday at Rudra’s Kitchen homestay in Guwahati’s Dharapur-Garal area. She was later pronounced dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Police have detained Ashiq Ali, a 26-year-old man who was staying with Nimisha at the homestay. Investigators are examining all possible angles surrounding her death while awaiting the post-mortem report. Ali’s claim that Nimisha died by suicide has not been independently verified.
Sarma said investigators would review Nimisha’s statements on Facebook and other platforms, visit her home and speak with her parents and other family members. “I am also saddened by the girl’s death,” he said, adding that he would remain informed about the investigation’s progress.
The Chief Minister also spoke about personal safety, family values and social traditions while discussing the case. “The girl was not a minor; she was an adult,” Sarma said, adding that people should consider how they conduct themselves and follow the values and traditions that help maintain a better society.
The homestay was sealed after a preliminary investigation reportedly identified lapses in maintaining guest records. Police said officers were reviewing the establishment’s documents and the circumstances of Nimisha’s stay with Ali.
The death has sparked concerns and protests in parts of Guwahati as investigators continue their probe.
