In a significant policy shift, the Assam state cabinet has enacted an immediate prohibition on the serving of beef in all hotels and restaurants across the region. This sweeping ban extends to social events, making it illegal to consume or serve beef in any public venue, a move that has ignited considerable discussion among residents and stakeholders alike.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a cabinet meeting held via video conference from Delhi. Previously, the sale of beef was restricted within a 5-kilometer radius of temples, but this new regulation broadens the scope to encompass the entire state of Assam. The decision aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to uphold cultural sensitivities and cater to the preferences of the majority population in the region.
The ban on beef serving is expected to have significant implications for the culinary landscape in Assam, a state known for its diverse food culture. During the same briefing, Chief Minister Sarma outlined ambitious plans for state infrastructure, including a six-lane road from Guwahati to the airport. Additionally, discussions are underway for an express highway project connecting Guwahati to Barapani and Barapani to Silchar, projected to cost approximately 25,000 crores. These developments signify the government’s commitment to improving connectivity and economic growth in Assam.
Furthermore, considerations for a bridge project over the Brahmaputra River, linking Morigaon to Dergaon, have also been mentioned. These infrastructural advancements are expected to bolster trade and tourism, thereby fostering a more robust economy in the region.
